Rheumatoid arthritis is called Aamvat in Ayurveda and is mainly caused by vitiated Vata dosha and decreased digestive capacity i.e. agnimandya.
The immune system of the human body is responsible to fights against infections, curing diseases, and keeping the body free from diseases, and fighting against any disease. If the immune system is weakened due to any reason, one can catch any infections easily and symptoms like cold, fever, cough, abdominal pain and illness often appear on the body. But sometimes the immune system gets disturbed and starts acting very weirdly. Such changed faulty immune system recognizes our body substance as a foreign body and starts to kill or damage cells or body tissues. Many cells and organs in the body come under the influence of such a damaged Immune System and some diseases occur due to the deterioration of their function, such diseases are called Auto-Immune Diseases. Rheumatoid arthritis is also one such disease.

Rheumatoid arthritis is characterized by swelling, pain, heat, and redness of the joints. According to Ayurvedic scriptures, this disease starts from the digestive system. If the consumed food is not properly digested due to reduced digestive fire (i.e. Jatharagni Mandya), it is converted into aama. Ama is partially digested sticky food and can be considered as toxins. When the digestion of food is incomplete, the Aama is formed in the body, and only then, if for some reason the Vata is also provoked, it spreads this aama-like poison all over the body and this Vata keeps accumulating in some parts of the body. In particular, the large joints and then the small joints accumulate and interfere with the function of these joints and cause symptoms such as pain, swelling, redness, and hot joints. Both aama and Vata combine to cause swelling of the synovial membrane in the joints, damages the bones, and even damage the cartilage cells. The disease is most common in people in their 40s and 60s. Genetic factors may also be a factor responsible for this. The disease is six times more common in women than in men.

Causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis (Aamavata): -
According to modern science, the causes of this disease are not yet known, the sudden change in immune system is the cause of this disease, but according to some scientists, sometimes some bacteria can also cause this disease.
According to Ayurveda, toxins and their accumulation in the joints are associated with the Vata dosha.
Genetic factors also contribute to the disease.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (Aamavata)Treatment: -
Rheumatism is treated in a few stages depending on the condition, age, and condition of the person. It is more difficult to treat this disease in people with Vata nature than in other people with Pitta and Kapha nature.
In the first stage of treatment, Aama pachan is done in the body using diuretic and digestive aamapachak medicine. This strengthens the digestive system, improves digestion, and restricts the production of aama in the body, as well as digests the stored aama in the body. Local swedana (Hot fomentation) is performed for digestion of aama located in the joints.
Improving digestion stops the formation of aama and then the second phase of treatment is started, mainly using some ayurvedic painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs, some vata nashak drugs are also used to control the vitiated Vata. Also, some external treatments like Pindasveda, Upanah, Patrapottali Swed, etc. are done for local rheumatism and swelling. It also boosts the immune system. Pain and stiffness in the joints are completely reduced after this stage of treatment.
In the third and final stage of treatment, treatment is given to prevent the recurrence of the disease. In this stage internal medicine and external medicines are used for treatment. Some Rasayana medicines (antioxidants) are used in internal medicine as well as in external treatment. After this treatment, all the symptoms of the patients disappear and they can lead a normal life.
